Frequently Asked Questions

About Support Groups

Do I need to register ahead of time?

No. Participants are welcome to drop in to any scheduled support group meeting in Anchorage or in Eagle River. The exception to this are the online support groups which do require pre-registration to access meetings.

Do I need a referral?

No. Our meetings are not group therapy as we are not clinicians, counselors, or therapists. Groups are led by trained peer facilitators who are also affected by mental illness.

I'm concerned about privacy. Are meetings confidential?

Yes, all meetings are confidential. We do ask participants to sign in at meetings using an initial and a unique 4 digit numeric code. This allows us to report to our funders the number of people we serve in order to maintain our funding. You are more than welcome to use a nickname or pseudonym at meetings if you wish.

I notice some meetings take place at churches. Are NAMI groups religious?

Does it cost anything to attend?

No. All activities at NAMI Anchorage are of no cost to participants. If you would like to help further our mission of providing support to people affected by mental illness, click here to learn more about how you can support NAMI Anchorage.

I don't have a mental illness or have a family member with a mental illness but I'm interested in attending a support group. Can I participate?

Our meetings are only open to those who share in the same lived experience. The Connection Support Group is for people who experience mental illness and the Family Support Group is for family members, friends, or loved ones of people who experience mental illness. Mental health professionals, students, researchers, or other similar groups of people are not allowed to attend either group unless they themselves are undergoing these challenges. This policy allows for a safe place for participants to speak freely and from the perspective of equals.

No. Religious beliefs, prayer, or other forms of religious expression aren't built into any NAMI programs. Churches offer us a low-cost location for our groups to meet.

About Classes

Do I need to register ahead of time?

Yes. Pre-registration is required as class size is limited. To register, you can complete the online form for the class you're interested in, email us, or call the office at 907-272-0227.

Do I need to bring or prepare anything?

Bring a pen or pencil to each class as there will be some written exercises, and you may wish to bring extra paper to take your own notes. For Family-to-Family and Peer-to-Peer, you will be given a binder with class materials that is yours to keep. Otherwise, bring an open mind and be ready to learn!

I missed the first class. Can I still register?

Yes, participants can join some courses late to a certain extent depending on the course. Please contact the office ASAP for more information.

Can I drop in to a class, or attend only a few of the classes?

No. Courses are consecutive and each class session builds on the knowledge of previous classes, so attending each class is very important. We ask participants to commit to attending every class session. Understandably, emergencies do arise, so if you are unable to attend a class session we ask that you let a teacher or the office know.

Does it cost anything to attend?
